360° Reviews

In addition to our coaching services, we offer qualitative 360° Leadership Reviews.

Our review process involves identifying key stakeholders, conducting qualitative interviews, and synthesizing the data into a cohesive picture based on interpersonal development and the needs of the business.

While receiving feedback can often be challenging due to the deep personal investment in the work, it is necessary for professional development. By embarking on a comprehensive 360° Review exercise with a trained coach, a leader will be assisted in collecting useful feedback, digesting it from a place of neutrality and support, and implementing new practices or habits that will result in a more successful, fully developed leader.

“Performance-based 360-degree feedback is a tool that can identify how a person interacts with others. It can identify the effectiveness of a person’s behavior vis-à-vis others. It can identify the consequences of a person’s behavior on others. It can identify a person’s strengths and weaknesses. It can identify hidden strengths. It can identify blind spots that could derail a career.”

Lawrence John Cipolla

360° reviews can be executed through a variety of means and from a variety of motivations.

At InnerWork, our trained professionals have done extensive work as counselors and pair this experience with training in qualitative research methods. We apply both qualitative and quantitative methods to conducting these 360° reviews.

To be effective in a truly comprehensive review, it is important that we extract the lived experience of what it is like to live with, to lead, or to be led by an individual. As human beings, we are often more receptive to words and stories than to numbers or data.

These reviews are most effective for individuals who recognize the nature of blindspots and genuinely desire to see themselves more clearly. These reviews are not effective as replacements for hard conversations or an escape from the process of growth. San Francisco-based coach Ed Batista has described this well here.

The 360° Review Process

  1. You will identify people who have a vantage point on your behavior and performance. This group of reviewers typically includes 8-15 individuals.

  2. Together with your coach, you’ll identify focal points for growth and feedback that will help to guide your review. These focal points will be utilized to create several open-ended questions for your review group.

  3. Your review group will engage in one-on-one conversations with your coach, which will be recorded. These conversations will be guided by the identified open-ended questions. At the same time, the strength of a qualitative interview is to follow what is emerging in order to construct a rich and deep picture of the experience in question.

  4. Information from the recorded interviews, our work in coaching (if applicable), and your coach’s impressions as a qualitative investigator will be utilized to construct a detailed, narrative style report.

  5. Once the final report is compiled, the next steps will be determined by the intentions of the review and your preferences as a coaching client. These options include:

    • Providing the report to you alone.

    • Reviewing the report with you and your coach.

    • Allowing the feedback group to review the report prior to your personal review.
