Enneagram FAQs

General Enneagram Questions

  • The Enneagram is a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal development. In the Enneagram system, there are 9 core types that each represent a unique pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving. These identified patterns arise from an inner motivation and worldview that is unique to each type. Because the Enneagram prioritizes identifying a core worldview and corresponding motivation, it is able to identify patterns that evade other assessments. The Enneagram system begins by identifying the underlying worldview of an individual and then traces this worldview to the patterns which appear in the life and relationships of the individual. The Enneagram can be utilized across a broad spectrum of applications. These applications include workplace functioning and team development.

  • The Enneagram is a framework for understanding the human experience. It honors the complexities of human motivation, provides a path for reflection and the opportunity to try new ways of responding to self and others. Many personality tools used by workplaces focus on behaviors. The Enneagram goes beyond just behaviors and focuses on motivation. It provides insight into motivations, hidden fears, and desires that can highlight the ways a person can become stuck in patterns of relating to themselves and others. With this information a person is then able to consider new ways of releasing those patterns.

  • We don’t know where the Enneagram symbol came from originally. However, for thousands of years scholars have used numbers to organize information about people and nature. Many of the concepts of the Enneagram can be found across cultures throughout history particularly in the work of Christian, Jewish and Sufi monastics.

The modern Enneagram was developed over the past century through the work of George Gurdjieff, Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, MD, a Chilean Psychiatrist. The Enneagram system theory continues to develop today through the work of teachers worldwide.

  • These are the lines of connection. Different Enneagram authors and thinkers use different language to describe these connections (stress, release, integration, disintegration, child-heart, etc…) However, the lines show the movement that can exist within the Enneagram system. When you are in a place of safety or a place of stress you can access the high or low sides of your connected types. This can be helpful to recognize in your own life and identify how you can use this movement for your growth.

  • No, the Enneagram has not been the subject of enough peer-reviewed research studies at this time. However, slowly there are more researchers interested in it. A few studies have overlaid the Enneagram with the Big Five personality traits and found significant correlations.

Using the Enneagram

  • The Enneagram has always been a system in which a person must reflect and identify the type that resonates the most. There are a few options for identifying your Enneagram type. You can schedule a typing interview with a certified practitioner, do your own work reading about the 9 types, or you can take the IEQ9 assessment. Out of the interest of time and accuracy we use the IEQ9 assessment for all of our workshops. This is the best assessment currently available. However, even with the assessment it’s important to read your results and spend time reflecting on them. Only you can affirm whether you are one type or another.

  • Most Enneagram writers and teachers are in agreement that you are born a type. However, in order to identify a type you must have enough self-awareness to see the habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Therefore, there are people who say they are one type but years later identify with another type. Rather than seeing this as a change in type, the Enneagram would say that the person has grown and now understands themselves better than they did previously.

  • Each of the 9 core types can be subdivided into 3 subtypes. These subtypes are named after three basic instincts that all humans have: self-preservation, one-to-one relationships, and social structures. While every human being has all three instincts, they will have one which is primary. Your subtype is the primary way that you live out your type day to day. Subtypes account for much of the great variety that exists within each core type.

  • Each core type has two wings. They are the types on either side of the core type on the Enneagram figure. For example, a Type 1 has both a 9 wing and a 2 wing. You can access the attributes of your wing types and they can also contribute to the “flavor” of your individual manifestation of the type. For example, a Type 1 with a strong 2 wing will be warm and more relationship focused.

  • When a personality framework becomes just a label or a box it’s no longer helpful and should be thrown out. However, the Enneagram honors that people are more than just a personality type, each person is a unique individual with their own story and journey. However, the Enneagram also highlights common patterns of human experience. When we are able to identify those patterns or habits within ourselves we are free to “get out of the box” to get out of the habitual patterns we find ourselves in.
